May 4th was the Student Led Conference in SIS Elementary! My conference was at 11am. We were supposed to make a presentation about our learning in fourth grade. My presentation had 25 pages! It went pretty okay than I thought it would. The reason I think that is because I didn’t make any mistakes. But I thought I would make mistakes. However, even I didn’t make any mistakes, I felt really nervous. The reason is that I kept on shaking and I didn’t make any eye contacts with my mom or Mr. Sheppard. The reason I did those stuff was because I am NOT confident. So the next time I do this presentation, I will add more details to my slides, make less slides without details, and talk MUCH loudly.
This photo is a screenshot of my Student Led Conference Presentation.
Today was the AMPed Fair! Fifth graders, teachers, and parents came. Do you know what is AMPed? A lot of people don’t know what that means. I didn’t know what that meant until we were doing AMPed. So AMPed is kind of an action which you are doing by yourself. AMPed stands for Autonomously Mastered Purposeful EDucation. My project was School Materials Organizer. I chose this project, because it would really help students. I thought of this idea, because I thought it was really hard to take out the things I needed from my basket. My project was successful, because everyone thought this would really help students, and they liked my idea of making for each grade. But next time, I will do it differently by trying to make my Organizer smaller and stronger. Today, or during working on my AMPed, I learned that if you choose one topic, you have to work on it until it’s good enough even you don’t like it during the progress. Plus, I liked that everyone wanted my Organizer even after the fair. I only had five, so only five people got it. I feel sorry for the ones who didn’t got it, though.
On April 10th, we were doing a very fun activity. We were going to Utopia which is a real word. But for our activity, we used it as a place that is so good. You can watch a movie and eat a snack there! Still, we couldn’t go directly to Utopia, we had to go trough the airport. First, we decided which member will we be for our family in 4A. Our family was our Classcraft group. So for me, I had six family members who were migrating there, including myself. I was the aunt, Oliver was the mom, Nathan was the dad, Dorothy and Leann were the twelve years old twins, and Aidan was the five years old boy. And the teachers were CBP officers and the parents who volunteered to help were people in the airport who checks us. After deciding the members, one oldest female member had to choose a small piece of paper in a basket which Ms.Kim was holding. On the paper, it said which country your family member will be from. There were six countries in total. Canada, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, Syria, and Sierra Leone. I think Canadian and German was nicely from the CBP officers, Thai and Mexican were sometimes treated nice but not really most of the time from CBP officers, and Syrian and Sierra Leonean were not really treated well from CBP officers. Also, I think Canadian and German had all the things that they needed, Thai and Mexican had just one thing that they needed, and Syrian and Sierra Leonean had none that they needed. Before we went to the immigration checkpoint (Level 5), we researched about our country. Then after Lunch recess, we went to the immigration checkpoint. First, we watched a short video about Utopia. Then, we got a basket for each family. Our basket had seven passport covers, six papers that needed to be filled out, an information paper which said all the information about us, and a glue. My group first took turns gluing the passport cover to a paper which we had to fill out. Then, we got our photo that we could glue on the paper. It was very hard to use it one by one. When we were about to fill out the paper, Kennedy asked to borrow our glue, since Kennedy’s group needed it. So after letting them keep our glue, we were about to write, we realized we didn’t have a pen. Luckily, I asked Jeha if I could borrow their pen since they had all other stuff including several pens. We quickly filled them out and lined up to let the people who were checking our passports check our passports. But we had to line up again since we had to rewrite our passport names in capital. The one who was checking our passports was Kennedy’s mom, Mrs.Gibson. She spoke in an unusual accent. But we did get stamps from her even though we might have answered some wrong because we didn’t understand what she was saying. After getting the stamp, Alexander’s mom checked if we had any stuff that weren’t allowed in the airport. We were all okay. The next one was by Nikki’s mom, checking if we were sick or not. On our information card, it said we had Mild Flu. So we had to wait. After a long time, Nikki’s mom checked our fever, then let us go. Then, we were at the VISA station. We had to answer the questions on the VISA paper for each person, and we had to write another question just for a person in our family. So we wrote question and put my name. While we were writing, I don’t know why, but Nathan was sent to the waiting room. So he delayed us a bit since we had to wait for him. When he came back, we completed his VISA and then went to get our VISA checked. Ours got checked by Leah’s mom. That went swiftly than other stations. When we got all of ours checked, we were in Utopia. We watched a little bit of Moana. We got ice creams but I didn’t want one. Not everybody have gone through all the steps. I think they were all from Syria or Sierra Leone. I think they were not done because it was hard to get the things they needed, the securities were being more sensitive to them, and the CBP officers didn’t really help them to answer questions. So I don’t think that was fair for everyone. From this activity, I learned a lot of things. First of all, I learned our parents work really hard when we migrate, because we only did part of the real migration, but it was still hard. However, our parents have to do all the steps and some extra real stuff for real! Plus, if they are moving for just political, social, economic, educational, religious, military reason, and doing this whole thing, that’s really a challenge. Second of all, I learned that when you are migrating, you needed VISA, fine health, don’t have bad information in your passport, answer questions from securities, and know your arrival date. Last of all, I learned that you have to kind of expect what is going to happen. If you don’t know at all, something might take longer time, or you might annoy a person. So expecting what would happen is a benefit to you.
Fossils are something left from a plant or an animal that lived long time ago that have turned into a rock. Many of fossils are things that now is extinct. Extinct means a living thing’s kind is no longer alive today. For example, dinosaurs are extinct.
Fossils are form when a living things dies. It gets covered by sediment. For example, like mud, sand, soil, or clay. After a long time, soft pats decompose. Decompose means it breaks down. Then, the harder parts stay. After that, more layers of sediments pile up. So, it gets heavier as more sediments pile on. Since it got heavy, sediments presses down, so it creates a lot of pressure. Then, the lower layers turn into rocks. Water can sip through and create minerals. After many years, layers of rock slowly wash away. So then, fossils can be found. But sometimes, the living creatures can form into fossils in other ways. For example, there can be prints on rocks, get frozen in an ice, or get trapped in a tree sap. Fossils can give us clues about what happened or what was it like long time ago.
We made our own fossils. First, we had to put some clay at the bottom of a cup. Then, we made a print with a shell on the clay. After few days, we pour a little bit of liquid in that cup. After another few days, it got hard. So, we took out our fossils. But mine had broke, so I had to do it again. Next time I do this experiment, I will be very careful.
I learned from this fossil unit, that fossils can form in different ways, that some body parts from a fossil can give clues like what did that thing ate, what kind of place it live and so on. This fossil unit taught me a lot of things.
This is my fossil!
Today, we had our reading buddy day! Since some had to share one reading buddy with another classmate, we also decided to be buddies with another class. So I had a new buddy. I mean buddies. Last time I shared one buddy with a friend but this time I had two buddies for myself! One boy was called Anthony and one girl was called Kayla. It was so hard to be buddies with two of them. They wanted to read different kinds of books. They were completely different. When I started to read a book for them that one of them wanted, they didn’t pay any attention to me. But we did read some books. I’ll tell you some books we read: “Wow,city!” “Dora….” and some others. We also took some pictures. Like me, they don’t usually smile. I’ll show you some pictures.
Even it’s hard, I like my reading buddies.
In math unit 2, we learned about measurements. For length, we learned about millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers. For weight, we learned about grams and kilograms. For volume, (it’s math not sound) we learned about milliliters and liters. And these are all metric measurements. I like this math measurement unit, because it’s very easy and very fun.
This is the poster.
This is the part of meter stick.
This writing unit was realistic fiction. I liked writing this story since I like writing. My title of this story was Raina’s Own Room. When I saw how much words I wrote, I saw that I wrote 2,220 words! (They are words not letters) My story’s character is Raina. She is kind of bossy and mean sometimes, but she still has kind heart. Her character trait happened because of her little sister Lucy. Raina realizes that Lucy is very smart and understands other people’s feelings very well for her age. Even Raina gets bad sometimes, she has a kind heart. I will show you my story……
Raina’s Own Room
Scene 1: Getting Out Of Bed
“Boing!Boing!” Something made Raina move.
‘It’s my annoying little sister,Lucy.’ Thought Raina. She grabbed her blanket and yanked to her side.
“Quit that,Lucy. You know how much I hate when I get disturbed!” Lucy kept on boinging ignoring Raina.
“I don’t care,it’s morning 6am,you should be awake.” Raina yelled back
“I don’t care too,I should be awake at 7am. Not 6am. So get out!” Lucy giggled
“You can’t make me. Let’s play dolly with me.” Raina said “Dolls are for babies.” Then pinched Lucy with all her might. Lucy’s lips trembled, then her eyes filled with water. She shouted
“I didn’t do anything! Bad Raina. I’m telling mom!” Raina mumbled
“Ha,Lucy always cries. This is the best way to make her go out.” She was just glad Lucy was gone. Then, she tried to sleep. But she was already woken by Lucy. She thought ‘If Lucy didn’t woke me,I will be having a wonderful dream. But now,I’m wide awake because of that Lucy. I should have pinched her more harder. No… It would have gotten me into a big trouble. What am I going to do if she tells mom? Maybe say she’s lying or that she had a dream? No…’ Suddenly like answering her she heard her mom yell
“Raina wake up. I know you’re awake. Now.” It wasn’t a pleasant voice.
“Yes mom,I’m coming.” Raina said, not waiting for her mom to say anything. Raina locked the door of hers. She changed her clothes into her favorite ballerina shirt, her favorite skirt, made her hair into a ponytail and went out of her room slowly as she trembled with fear. “Mom won’t be able to prove that I pinched Lucy. I could just say I didn’t. And Lucy will be scared of me because I just pinched her.” Raina took a deep breath and make sured no one was listening to her. “L-U-C-Y stands for Lucy.” Raina repeated to herself. “S-T-U-P-I-D stands for Lucy too.”
Scene 2: Gets Scolded By Her Mom
At the kitchen,her mom asked
“What did you exactly do to your sister,Raina?” Raina lied
“I only said stop waking me up” Her mom said
“I don’t think that is the only thing that you said. I heard you yelling. And Lucy told me that you had pinched her. You’re grounded young lady.” Raina didn’t like the sound of that. So Raina was suddenly afraid
“Okay,I did those things. But anyway, mom, can I please have my own room? Lucy is too messy. Please?” Her mom thought for a minute than she gave her a signal of come. So she went to the dining room and sat down as she felt she had did a bad thing. Then, her mom came to where Raina and Lucy was sitting and gave them their breakfasts while she started talking.
“Lucy, your sister says she wants her own room, what do you think about giving her a room and you getting your own room?” Lucy yelled
“No!No! I like Raina. Don’t let Raina have her own room. I will be scared at night and usually at days too.” Raina rolled her eyes
“But mom,be fair. You should listen to my opinions too. There is no one sharing their rooms with 6 years old little bossy and mean sister.”
“Yes there is”
“No there isn’t”
“Stop Lucy, stop Raina. Now Raina,my answer will be NO. And I don’t need any other words from you.” Her mom said.
“But.. But..” Raina pleaded. Lucy stuck out out her tongue and whispered
“I win! You lose!”
“Get ready for school girls, you’ll be late. It is almost 8am” Her mom said as she went back to her room. “What a disaster from the beginning of the day.”
“You made mommy sick.” Lucy stomped.
“Nope. You made me complain. Now please, out of my way. I will be late.” Raina answered as she walked out of the door. But secretly in her mind, she thought ‘Mom only likes Lucy.’ Then wiped her tears with her hand and crying.
Scene 3: Goes To The Counselor
When Raina was at her classroom having math, she kept on thinking about getting her own room. Suddenly she heard someone say
“……Raina!” And she recognized that voice,it was Miss Folly, her teacher.
“Um,could you say it again, please?” Raina said, feeling embarrassed. Miss Folly sighed
“Please pay more attention to me next time. I said what is 50 times 100?” Raina said
“500. No,I mean 5,000.” Then, she started to think about room again. After 20 more minutes, the bell rang “RIING!” and it was time for recess. When she was about to get to recess,Miss Folly called
“Raina, could you come here please?” Raina came and Miss Folly said “You’ve been acting weird today. You were staring at the window and you never raised your hands to answer any questions. Usually, you’re always looking at me,always answering at least 10 questions in each class. What’s wrong with you,Raina? Maybe you should go to the counselor’s office.” Raina thought for a second. She did thought counselors can help solve this problem. So she nodded. Then she walked to the counselor’s office and knocked. After few seconds,a woman came up to her.
“Hi” She said to Raina. “I’m Mrs.Adam. How about you? You look very gorgeous! Come in!” Mrs.Adam looked like she was 30. Raina said as she was coming in
“My name is Raina. I think you might give me some helps for my problem. I have a six years old sister. I have to share my rooms with her. I asked my mom for my own room. But mom said no. I know this is not a serious problem but can you help me?” Mrs.Adam smiled
“Of course,so I think I know why. Did you tell your mom why? Were you nice to your sister? Did you say things in nice ways?” Raina said
“All no,Mrs.Adam.” Mrs.Adam suggested
“So,maybe you should try to say your ideas more specifically. And be more nice.” Raina liked that idea even though she it was hard for her.
“Yeah, thanks Mrs.Adam.” Mrs.Adam just smiled to her saying “Raina, good luck!”
Scene 4: Gets An Idea By Her Friends
At her home,Raina had invited her friends to come and play. She was so embarrassed with her little sister that she locked Lucy to her room.
“Don’t ruin my play date.” She told Lucy. Then told her friends she didn’t have any siblings. Raina didn’t let her friends go to her bedroom, because Lucy was there. Instead, she let them go to their parents room. She was looking around making sure no one went in the bedroom. Luckily, her friends liked the room because her parents had an “interesting” room. Her parents liked to decorate their rooms almost every week! Raina thought it was weird before, but now,she thanked her parents. She was satisfied. In her parents room, there were rhombus shaped beds and triangle shaped desks. It looked very interesting. But few minutes later, her friends were bored.
“Can you show us your room,Raina? You have 2 rooms, right? I saw your studying room, but how about your bedroom? Where do you sleep?”
“Uhm,I…I… I’m sorry. I lied to you guys. I do have a little sister. And I have to share rooms with her. I asked mom for my own room. But she won’t budge. And I talked to the counselor, and I don’t know if I’ll do that!” Raina bursted out. Then, she told what happened from beginning to end. She didn’t thought they will believe her. One of her friends said “You should do what Mrs.Adam told you to do. Also, you can prove that you’re old enough.” Raina’s face began to smile. It wasn’t a normal one. It was more brighter than the usual one.
“Thanks guys! I don’t know what to do with out you!” After one hour, her friends were gone. She let her sister out of the room and went to her desk. She wrote something and drew something. It looked very perfect. She drew and wrote. And drew and wrote. Finally it was done. She had planned a marvelous plan to action.
Scene 5: Her Marvelous Plan
Raina ran as fast as she can to her mom.
“NO RUNNING IN THE HOUSE RAINA!” Her mom yelled. “Sorry, mom. But could you please listen to me just for 5 minutes?” Raina pleaded. Her mom was very surprised that she wasn’t inpatient as usual. Raina’s mom said
“Sure. Come to the kitchen.” When Raina walked slowly to the kitchen, her mom grinned to her.
“Mom,I’m sorry for the trouble I made this morning. So,I’m saying slowly again. May I ask you for my own room? I am 10 as you know. No one in my grade is sharing their rooms with their siblings. I also need my privacy and it’s hard to study when Lucy is playing, yelling all around. Also, Lucy interrupts when I’m on the phone, when I have play dates. Please? And I’ll take care of Lucy to prove I’m old enough and responsible enough.” Her mom said
“Well…. Okay. So then, could you babysit Lucy later at 6 till 9? Because I have to go to the mall to buy few things. Lucy’s usual babysitter is sick so she’s not able to come. If Lucy tells me you did a good job,I’ll let you have your own room. But no torturing Lucy and making her like last time. If you do,you’ll never have your own room. Got it? Yes or no?” Raina thought about last time she had tortured Lucy by making her say that Raina was at home even though she wasn’t and it didn’t work. She gulped
“I..I.. will try my best. I am not sure but I’ll try.” Her mom snapped
“You have to be positive.” Raina said
“I will.” So then, her mom called
“Lucy, Raina is going to babysit you. Listen to her and behave your self.” Lucy said
“I’m a good girl not a bad girl like Raina.” Her mom said “Lucy, that’s not a nice thing to say.” Lucy sighed “Okay, you’re kind of nice too,Raina.”
‘My plan is working.’ Raina smiled. But it was only one of her plans. She had to make sure her other plans went smoothly.
Scene 6: Her Plan Not As She Wanted
When her mom left after dinner,Raina said in a kind voice “What do you want to do for two hours?” Lucy said thinking “Well, let’s explore the house like we did when you were 8 and I was 3.” Raina thought
‘Lucy is not so bad after all!’ Raina then took Lucy outside in the backyard. They went around and around the house when Lucy yelled
“Raina!” Raina ran to her. Lucy suddenly cried “I’m always being not nice to you. I’m always saying or doing something very bad but I don’t mean it. I tried to say this since this morning but I couldn’t. Don’t think it’s because of you.” Raina looked at Lucy very carefully not believing her. But Lucy looked very innocent. At the same time, they said “Sorry for being mean.” Raina told Lucy “I feel very sorry. I’m 5 years old older than you but you say things that sound older.” Lucy then said
“Let’s go inside Raina,I don’t want to play. I want to sleep.” So they went inside and Raina tucked Lucy in bed. But she saw that Lucy wasn’t sleeping. So Raina just acted like she thought Lucy was asleep and went out. She thought
‘This lately,I was very stupid. I should have remembered that time when Lucy didn’t slept when I was sick. And I never did good things for her. Maybe mom was right. I’m not responsible enough.’ When her mom came back,Raina ran to her mom. Lucy did too since she was awake.
“Lucy,it’s your sleeping time! Go back to sleep.” Her mom said to Lucy.
“Just wait mommy,I think Raina did a good job taking care of me. I think you should give her,her own room.” Lucy said. “Are you sure,Lucy?” Her mom asked surprised. Lucy nodded. Raina said weakly
“I don’t think so. I’m not responsible enough.” Her mom was very surprised but she was happy
“Raina,you are responsible.” Raina asked
“Really? I’m responsible?” They nodded. Lucy said
“Let’s get started right now!” Her mom and Raina said at the same time laughing
“Do you really want to be working at night 10pm?!” That night,Raina couldn’t go to sleep. So silently, she woke up. She thought ‘What will it be feel like to have my own room?’ Her chest pounded like a thunder. ‘Like mom and Lucy said, maybe I old enough. Like my changed personality. I was very unpleasant at first but now I’m not!’ Raina was very proud of herself.
This is my story arc.
This is my character.
Today,we met with our reading buddies for the first time. My buddy was a girl and she was very cute. She spoke English really good! She wasn’t too shy so I was very satisfied since it’s hard to be buddies of kids who is very quiet. Anyway,I was reading books to her with Misha. We many books like Informational book and Realistic Fiction book. I showed my buddy Mega Photos app and photos on my iPad and she enjoyed it. I felt very happy and had fun when I was working with my buddy. I hope next reading buddy time comes soon because I think I will improve my reading skills and talking out loud which is my goal.
*The last picture is an app called MegaPhoto. You can take fun pictures! If you want, you can download it!
