To start this project, Grade 9 Art students looked at renowned abstract figural artists Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Students chose one artist and one sculpture – researched, analysed (using Feldman’s Approach) and then sketched the sculpture using at least 2 different techniques (used by Moore and Hepworth).
Both Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth’s sculptural forms are based on natural figural poses and abstracted and simplified to their pure form. So, for Step Two, students had to photograph themselves in various stages of movement – then abstract their own form. (Stay tuned of photos of student’s actual sketches. We did ‘old school’ style for this project – which is traditional sketchbooks and some of their work is truly awesome!)
