ending the year with colour – Oaxacan inspired clay sculptures

For our final project of the year, grade 6 art students decided to explore the culture and art of Oaxaca, Mexico.

We were super delighted to learn as we explored the cultural Oaxacan animal sculptures, our SIS biology teacher Ms. Michaels is an avid Oaxacan sculpture collector -and she has brought many sculptures with her to China!

After designing their colourful animal designs, students explored techniques of clay sculpture (click here for our 6 clay video channel) and then got to work carving their clay sculptures.

After our first firing, we explored patterns, colours and decorated our animals using some of the ideas from the Oaxacan animals…. and some of our own ideas.

Check out (some) of our finished works!
