Bayside Update June 10, 2019

Dear Bayside Parents,

With only 5 school days remaining in the 2018-19 school year there are a number of important events taking place for Bayside students. Thank you for your support over the next couple of days. It is important for all of our students to be at school and involved in these events right up until we say goodbye on June 14.

All students are responsible for completing a year end check out form. These forms were distributed to students last week. This process ensures that students return all school property and clear all debts before June 14.

We hope to see you at many of the assemblies and events!

Bayside Update – January 21, 2019

Dear Bayside Parents,

Tomorrow is the last day of our 1st semester. This marks the half-way point in the school year. Take a minute and think back to the first week of classes in August and now look at how much your children have grown since then. Our teachers work with the students every day of the school year to ensure that each student continues to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally. I hope you can notice a difference in your children – we sure do!

This Tuesday and Wednesday we are taking individual and group student photos. Please remind your child to dress appropriately and brush their hair for the photos. These are the pictures we use for the yearbooks.

There are just under 2 weeks of classes before the Chinese New Year holiday. Please read through the upcoming events and make note of the ones important to you. We hope to see many of you at these events.

Bayside Update – November 12, 2018

Dear Bayside Parents,

This past weekend, like most weekends, was an eventful one for much of the SIS community. Friday night was our MS dance. Thank you to the PSA for decorating and helping with food for the event. Our HS varsity volleyball teams travelled to Shanghai to compete in the ACAMIS volleyball championship tournament. Both teams had some victories and some defeats but played hard in all games and represented SIS proudly. The boys were recognized with the Sportsmanship award. Our MS/HS badminton team also travelled to a competition last Saturday. The team from SIS finished in 3rd place in the 10-team tournament hosted by Clifford School in Guangzhou.

Our Primary Principal, Mr. Harish Kanabar, and I were in Dubai for 4 days to attend an international teacher recruitment conference. School administrators attend these fairs to interview teachers from around the world as they work to fill vacancies for the 2019-20 school year. The fair in Dubai featured nearly 75 international schools and over 600 teachers. We used this fair to interview potential candidates and to connect with other international school administrators. Recruitment fairs are one part of our overall strategic hiring practices in our effort to recruit the best international school teachers available. We will provide you with a full update once our hiring is complete early in 2019.

Last week at Bayside we had an incident where some of our students made poor choices of what they were sharing on social media. The incident was brought to the attention of our teachers and counselors by several concerned students. We addressed the issue immediately with the individual students involved. We also took some time in our advisories to review how to make wise choices when using social media and the importance of being a good digital citizen. Our role as educators and parents is to help students recognize when they have made a poor choice and to use the incident as a learning experience. While it was upsetting to see that some of our students had made poor choices, it was very encouraging to see so many students speaking up to teachers and saying they were not comfortable or happy with what others had posted. Attached is a document parents can use when discussing the wise use of social media with their MS or HS aged child (Family Tips from Commonsense Media). SIS will continue to work in partnership with our parents to help educate our students as they grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

I look forward to seeing you at one of the many upcoming events.

Mike Livingston – SIS Secondary Principal

If you need to meet longer, you can schedule a time to come in another day and continue your conversation. We require parents to sign up ahead of time for these conferences. Parent numbers are limited in each session. We will honour the time of those who signed up so no “drop ins” are allowed.

Conference Sign Up Link – Please follow this link to SignUpGenius to sign up for a Student-Involved Conference time. **Please note that Mr. Ill and Ms. Wilson will not be available on Tuesday, October 16 3:00-5:00 pm to discuss PE and Life Skills.

SIS Parent Identification (ID) Cards

If you still don’t have a Parent ID Card you can do it quickly and easily. Requests for Parent ID cards can be made via our self-service ID card website. Complete the online form and upload a passport-type photo. Please ensure that the photo is clear, well lit and shows the individual’s face and shoulders. Photos shot with a smartphone are fine. The school will supply two parent ID cards–one for mother and one for father. Parents do not need a new ID card each school year. Cards can be picked up at the Bayside front desk. Normal processing time for ID cards is two working days but as we are currently creating many cards for new families we will need three extra days. Cards can be picked up at the Bayside front desk five days after you submit your application.
