Earlier this month all parents received login information for the Gecko portal. Search your mailbox for a message from Ken Tsui to retrieve your personal login information.

An important event for all parents is our parent-teacher conferences. At Bayside these are called “Student-Involved Conferences” because this is an opportunity for the student, parents and teacher to have a conversation focused on learning. This year the Student-Involved Conferences will be on Monday, October 16 (MS students only) and Tuesday, October 17 (MS and HS students). Please use the link after the Student-Involved Conference information to sign up for your time.

Here’s some more information about how we report progress at Bayside:

Reporting Periods – SIS uses a semester system with two reporting periods in the academic year. Report cards are distributed at the end of the first semester in January and at the end of the second semester in June. Report cards are the official records of student progress. A report card shows a students’ proficiency levels for the reporting standards and ESLRs. In the high school, a letter grade is also provided. These show up on high school transcripts, are sent on to other schools when students transfer, and used when applying for universities.

Progress Reports available on Friday, October 13 – Progress reports are provided at the mid-point of each semester. These documents are used to communicate student progress to the students and parents. They are meant to inform parents of current progress and serve as a conversation starter for Student-Involved Conferences. Progress Reports are not part of a students’ permanent record and are not shared with other schools. Overall scores are not reported on the progress reports.

Student-Involved Conferences on Monday and Tuesday, October 16-17 – Student-Involved Conferences are an opportunity for parents, together with their child, to meet with teachers. It is important that your child attend the conference with you. We ask parents to sign up for a 2-hour time block to meet with all of their child’s teachers. (If you have more than one child you must sign up for more than one time block.) All of the teachers will be stationed on the first floor at Bayside in the music rooms, the drama room, in the cafe area, and in the amphitheater. Parents will be free to move around the first floor and meet with teachers for up to 10 minutes. If you need to meet longer, you can schedule a time to come in another day and continue your conversation. We require parents to sign up ahead of time for these conferences. We will honour the time of those who signed up so no “drop ins” are allowed.

Conference Sign Up Link – Please follow this link to SignUpGenius to sign up for a Student-Involved Conference time.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our Student-Involved Conferences.

Week Without Walls – All students in grades 6-11 will participate in our Week Without Walls programs during the week of October 23. Initial information about each grade level trip was sent home already and all parents should have completed an online registration form. Grade 12 students will remain at Bayside to work with their advisors and the university counselor.

MAP Testing, Parent Information Slides, HS Beach Retreat

Today our HS students had their day of bonding at the beach. The weather was perfect and the day was a huge success. Students connected within their advisories, their grade levels, and across the entire HS through structured activities and some free time to swim, play volleyball or soccer, or play cards and socialize in the shade. Pictures from the day are at the end of this post.

MAP Tests – Next week all students in grades 6 through 9 will will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®). We give students MAP tests as one measure of determining your child’s instructional level. The tests are also used to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year. SIS students complete MAP tests in the areas of Language Usage, Reading and Math. Your child will take the tests on an iPad (middle school) and a laptop (grade 9). MAP tests are a very applicable test for our students and provide a high level of formative assessment. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.  Minimal class time is disrupted in order for students to complete the test. Each school year, all students in grades 3-9 will take the tests in the Fall and in the Spring. This is our third year of MAP testing.  The report of each student is available in the Spring after the last MAP testing date.  This will go home with the end of year school report.

HS Beach Retreat

Beach Retreat and Upcoming Events

MS Beach Retreat – The MS headed out to their annual Beach Retreat this morning for a day of games, team building, and fun at the beach. The weather was perfect (slightly overcast) and the feedback I’ve received has been very positive.

HS Beach Retreat – Tomorrow the HS students will have their day at the beach. This year we had to make some changes because of the instability of the weather.

  1. No Senior overnight. The Seniors will ride the buses to the beach with everyone else on Friday morning.
  2. No evening barbecue. Buses will depart the beach at 3:00 pm so everyone is back at SIS around 5:00 pm.
  3. No STUCO overnight. All STUCO members will ride the buses home on Friday afternoon with everyone else.
We’ve made these changes to help ensure the safety of our students and teachers. We don’t want groups spending the night at the beach or traveling on the roads from the beach after dark.

We’ll continue to watch the weather tonight to ensure the safety of all involved. Everything looks good at this point. We’re hoping for a beautiful sunny day tomorrow!

Buses, Bikes, Beaches and Parent Information Sessions

Dear Bayside Parents,

The new boardwalk and park in front of the Bayside campus has been a beautiful addition to our school. As the weather cools down we hope to utilize this space during the day with classes going outside when appropriate and allowing students to go outside in a supervised area during lunch. As beautiful as the boardwalk is it has presented a few small challenges for us recently. Since typhoon Hato the boardwalk security team has regularly blocked access to the boardwalk. This makes it challenging to get to our front door. We have been told this closure will not happen often but when access to the boardwalk is blocked our students and parents can use the bus door on the corner of the school nearest Wanghai road.

With the construction of the boardwalk park we lost our bus loading zone. Our school buses now have to stop on Wanghai road to load and unload students. Student safety is our highest priority so our security guards, teaching assistants, and teachers are always present whenever students are getting on or off buses. We continue to work with the local authorities to ensure our students safety.

Another change we have at Bayside is the parking area for student, parent and teacher bicycles. Beginning tomorrow, September 1, we will ask the SIS community to park their bikes in the area near our bus door near Wanghai road. We have put out bike racks so students can safely lock their bikes when at school. We are currently working with the boardwalk authorities in hopes of building a secure, covered bike parking area. We will keep you informed as this progresses.

Our annual student Beach Retreats are taking place next Thursday (MS) and Friday (HS). All students have been given a permission form to share with you and return to their advisory teachers. The Beach Retreat is a great way for the students to get to know other students and teachers in a setting outside of the school building. With the recent typhoons and another possibly arriving this weekend we are monitoring the weather and the beach conditions to ensure the trips are safe. We will keep you informed as we see how the weather is as we get closer to the retreat dates.

Next week we have two Bayside parent information sessions:

Gecko Portal Access and ASAs and Sports at Bayside – Monday, September 4, 9:00 am in the Bayside Amphitheatre –This information session will focus on getting parents signed into the Gecko Portal. This is our online portal for signing up for ASAs and Sports, seeing student schedules, updating your contact information, and much more. Please bring a device (phone, tablet, or laptop) with you so we can get you logged in. The second half of this session will feature a presentation and discussion about our After School Activities and Sports available to our MS and HS students.

Bayside World Languages (Chinese and French) Parent Session – Wednesday, September 6, 2:00 pm in the Bayside Amphitheatre – Our Chinese and French teachers will present information about our language programs and how our students progress through our MS and HS classes.

We hope to see many of you at these information sessions.

Kind regards,

Mike Livingston | Secondary Principal
