ACAMIS Basketball Tournament – Last weekend SIS hosted the ACAMIS high school basketball tournament. SIS plays in the Yellow Division of ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools) with Yew Chung International School (Beijing), TEDA International School (Tianjin), International School of Qingdao, Xiamen International School, and the British International School Shanghai (Puxi). We meet with these schools at the end of our HS volleyball, basketball, and soccer seasons for a tournament to determine the ACAMIS champions. This is our first year to host one of these ACAMIS tournaments and our Athletic Director, Barry Jenkin, made sure our students and all the visiting athletes had a fantastic experience. Our PSA Go Geckos! group got involved and organized parent buses to and from the venue. The ES Cheerleading Club also got involved by cheering on the teams on the final day and performing at half time of the girls final (more info about the Go Geckos support and cheerleaders can be found on the SIS Parent Support Association WeChat feed). All of the results, pictures, and videos can be found on the tournament website: https://acamisbasketball2018yd.weebly.com. Our boys team faced some stiff competition but played well. They finished the tournament in 3rd place. The SIS boys were also selected as the Most Sportsmanlike Team of the boys tournament. Our girls team went into the tournament as defending champions. They dominated in every game they played. The SIS girls team ended the tournament undefeated and were crowned as the 2018 ACAMIS basketball champions! Thank you to all of the parents and students who worked to help make the tournament a huge success and to all those who came out to the gym to cheer on our Geckos!
Discover China Day – Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Discover China Day! Despite the cold weather we had a good turnout for the tasty food and incredible entertainment. Events like these are wonderful community builders and this particular day was a great way to celebrate the rich culture in which we live. Thanks to all the parents, students and teachers who helped to organize and run the various booths and games.
School Pictures for Students – Tomorrow, Tuesday Feb 6, will be school picture day at Bayside. We are using a new company this year so the pictures will be different from previous years. All students will have 2 photos taken – one sitting and one standing. (Be sure to keep this in mind when choosing what to wear!) Parents and students will be notified as soon as the pictures are ready.
Scholarships – This year SIS has created a scholarship program to attract the top academic students to our school. This new scholarship is available to HS students who are not currently enrolled at SIS. For our current students we award the Robert Dunseth Memorial Scholarship at the end of the second semester each year. This scholarship is awarded to a select number of current SIS High School students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and academic excellence. This award is provided by Shekou International School and International School Services. Students receiving this scholarship are awarded up to $5,000 USD, paid over two years, to be applied to SIS tuition or SIS school activity costs. Recent graduates who were Dunseth Scholarship recipients during their time at SIS have gone on to attend UC Berkley, McGill University, University of Toronto, Vanderbilt, King’s College London, and Cornell. Current students in grades 9-11 will be invited to apply for this scholarship later this Spring.
