To all of you moving on to a new school and new adventures next year, we wish you all the best in the future. Please come back to visit whenever you can! For all our returning families, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 15 from 5:00-6:00 pm. Classes start on August 16 at 8:15 am.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you soon.

Final Days of 2017-18

Dear Bayside Parents,

Today we said goodbye to the 8 high school students who will be leaving SIS at the end of this school year. Tomorrow we will have a middle school assembly to say goodbye to the MS students who are moving on. This is an emotional time for many of our students, teachers, and parents. Those students who are moving may be excited about their next school but they will also be a little nervous about the unknown and a little (or a lot) sad to be leaving behind many of their friends. It can also be a difficult time for the students who are remaining at SIS. They are watching some of their closest friends move away. This will also bring on many emotions and sadness. We are always watching to see how students are coping with the changes at the end of each year. Over the next 3 days our teachers, counselors, and administrators will be celebrating the end of the school year with our students. We will also be there to support those who are sad to say goodbye. Please keep an eye on your kids this week and offer your support if they need it.

Today we handed out the 2017-18 SIS Bayside Yearbooks (pictured above). This book is full of wonderful memories and we hope that the students will keep them safe so they can enjoy them many years from now. Unfortunately, we do not have extra yearbooks to hand out if a student loses theirs. Please remind your children to put their name in the their yearbook and to keep track of it over the next 3 days as students sign yearbooks during advisory time and lunch.

Tomorrow morning the Bayside students will be treated to a breakfast of bagels and cream cheese before they go to their first class. Thank you in advance to our wonderful PSA for doing this for our students!

Please remember that all students are responsible for completing a year end check out form. This process ensures that students return all school property and clear all debts before their report cards are published on June 15.

Our final Student Recognition Assemblies are on Thursday and Friday. Parents are always welcome to attend. We hope to see many of you at these assemblies.

Update – May 1 Holiday and MAP testing

Dear Bayside Parents,

Today is the first day of IB exams for our grade 12 students. Over the next 3 weeks all IB students worldwide (who are using the northern hemisphere schedule) will follow the same exam schedule set out by the IB. Our students are well prepared and ready for this final high school challenge. Our teachers will continue to support the Seniors over these 3 weeks of exams.

Thank you for your patience and understand as we had to reschedule some of our Student-Involved Conferences last week. Due to the unexpected power outage at Coastal Rose Garden 2 we were required to reschedule our two morning sessions. Fortunately, we have been able to do this without disrupting any classes or student activities. If you have not attended a conference yet we will be holding our final session on Tuesday, May 1 at 8:00-10:00 am. This is a national holiday and students do not have classes but we will be open for conferences. Please follow this link to SignUpGenius to sign up.

Congratulations to all of the students, teachers, and community members involved in the SIS Film Festival. Yesterday was the opening night that included a red carpet, celebrity appearances (in a way), and popcorn supplied by our PSA. The film festival concludes tonight. The festival begins at 6:30 pm and admission is free.

This weekend Ms. Coetzee and nine of our grade 7 and 8 musicians are participating in the South East Asian Strings festival hosted by the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG). We will be sure to share this news in an upcoming SIS Weekly Update.

We have a long weekend for the May 1 holiday. There will be no classes for students on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1. SIS will be open on May 1 for one session of Student-Involved Conferences (see the sign up link below) and for a teacher Professional Learning Day. Regular classes will resume on Wednesday, May 2.

Here is a list of upcoming important events at Bayside:

IB Exams – All grade 12 students are writing exams April 27 – May 18.

May 1 Holiday – No classes Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1.

Student-Involved Conferences – Tuesday, May 1 Sign Up Link – Please follow this link to SignUpGenius to sign up.

MAP Tests – Next week all students in grades 6 through 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®). We give students MAP tests as one measure of determining your child’s instructional level. The tests are also used to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year. SIS students complete MAP tests in the areas of Language Usage, Reading and Math. Your child will take the tests on an iPad (middle school) and a laptop (grade 9). MAP tests are a very applicable test for our students and provide a high level of formative assessment. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.  Minimal class time is disrupted in order for students to complete the test. Each school year, all students in grades 3-9 will take the tests in the Fall and in the Spring. This is our third year of MAP testing.  The report of each student is available in the Spring after the last MAP testing date.  This will go home with the end of year school report.

Upcoming Events – Progress Reports and Student-Involved Conferences

Dear Bayside Parents,

Here is a list of upcoming important events at Bayside:

Students will not receive a paper copy but they will have access to the reports on Friday during advisory time. You can access the progress report by logging into the Gecko portal or, if you would like a printed copy, you can ask your child to print the report during their advisory time.

Gecko Portal Log In Help – If you need help logging into the Gecko portal you can visit this site for tutorials. There is also a link to request your login credentials if you have forgotten your username and password. Once you have logged in successfully you can follow these instructions to change your password.

ACAMIS HS Soccer Tournament – Our HS soccer teams departed today for their final tournament in Shanghai hosted by the British International School Shanghai (Puxi). Go Geckos!

PRC Basketball Tournaments – This Saturday our 4 MS boys and girls basketball teams (2 of each!) will be playing in Pearl River Conference exchanges at the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), The International School of Macau (TIS), Shen Wai School (SWIS), and Quality Schools International Shenzhen (QSI). These “exchanges” are a day where several teams come together and play games. They are not tournaments and no champions are decided. These important games help all of the teams develop in actual game situations without the pressure of wanting to win the tournament. Go Geckos!

Student-Involved Conferences on Monday and Tuesday, April 16-17 – Student-Involved Conferences are an opportunity for parents, together with their child, to meet with teachers. It is important that your child attend the conference with you. We ask parents to sign up for a 2-hour time block to meet with all of their child’s teachers. (If you have more than one child you must sign up for more than one time block.) All of the teachers will be stationed on the first floor at Bayside in the music rooms, the drama room, in the cafe area, and in the amphitheater. Parents will be free to move around the first floor and meet with teachers for up to 10 minutes. If you need to meet longer, you can schedule a time to come in another day and continue your conversation. We require parents to sign up ahead of time for these conferences. We will honour the time of those who signed up so no “drop ins” are allowed.

Progress Reports, Student-Involved Conferences, Uniform Update

Dear Bayside Parents,

This weekend we have two important social events on our calendar. Tonight we are hosting our MS Spring Fling dance at Bayside from 5:30-7:00 pm. Tomorrow (Saturday, April 7) is the HS Prom. This year the Prom is being hosted at the Westin Hotel near Windows of the World.

Next week Progress Reports will be distributed on Friday, April 13, followed by Student-Involved Conferences on April 16 and 17. To sign up for conferences and for more information see below.

Mike Livingston – SIS Secondary Principal

SIS School Uniform Update – Uniform implementation delayed at Bayside – A committee of parents and teachers have been working on the introduction of school uniforms for August 2018 at SIS. The Primary School will continue with the original plan to have uniforms in place and ready for the first day of the 2018-19 school year. However, Bayside will not introduce uniforms until a yet-to-be-determined date. In September 2018 we will work with student groups to finalize the Bayside uniform design and decide on an implementation plan. The SIS uniform will be in place at Bayside by the beginning of the 2019-20 school year or possibly earlier. I look forward to having extra time to get more input and feedback from students in this process.

Progress Reports and Student-Involved Conferences – Progress reports will be available on Friday, April 13 online through the Gecko portal. Last semester all parents received login information for the Gecko portal. If you still haven’t logged in you can search your mailbox for a message from Ken Tsui to retrieve your personal login information.

Student-Invovled Conferences are important for all families. At Bayside these are called “Student-Involved Conferences” because this is an opportunity for the student, parents and teacher to have a conversation focused on learning. The Student-Involved Conferences will be on Monday, April 16 (MS students only) and Tuesday, April 17 (MS and HS students). Please use the link after the Student-Involved Conference information to sign up for your time.

Here’s some more information about how we report progress at Bayside:

Reporting Periods – SIS uses a semester system with two reporting periods in the academic year. Report cards are distributed at the end of the first semester in January and at the end of the second semester in June. Report cards are the official records of student progress. A report card shows a students’ proficiency levels for the reporting standards and ESLRs. In the high school, a letter grade is also provided. These show up on high school transcripts, are sent on to other schools when students transfer, and used when applying for universities.

Progress Reports available on Friday, October 13 – Progress reports are provided at the mid-point of each semester. These documents are used to communicate student progress to the students and parents. They are meant to inform parents of current progress and serve as a conversation starter for Student-Involved Conferences. Progress Reports are not part of a students’ permanent record and are not shared with other schools. Overall scores are not reported on the progress reports.

Conference Sign Up Link – Please follow this link to SignUpGenius to sign up for a Student-Involved Conference time. **Please note that Mr. Galvez will not be available on Monday, April 16 to discuss PE and Life Skills.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our Student-Involved Conferences.
