Story Arcs

Our Grade 9 class is moving towards the end of our creative writing unit and will soon be writing and publishing their own original stories. So far this year we have learned about characterization, setting, conflict, point-of-view, simile, metaphor, personification, dialogue, theme, and imagery. Our final story element is plot, which we explored through children’s books.  Ms Gomez joined our class and brought a box of stories for children that were fun to read and accessible for all. Students work in groups to come to consensus on exposition, rising action, climax and resolution. They then created a poster based on their findings. The next step is to apply this learning to their own writing. Stay tuned!

About the Author

I was a third culture kid - born in Louisiana, raised in Malaysia, graduated from High School in Egypt and lived for 15 years in New York. I was an actress who made a living temping, waiting tables and babysitting for about a decade before moving to London to attend Drama School. Ironically, it was there that I realized I didn't want to be an actress any more and moved back to New York to become a teacher. I spent seven crazy years teaching in public schools in NYC before moving to beautiful Shekou! I'm excited to teach English and help establish an extracurricular drama program.
