26 – 30 August, 2013

This week in KC…

Reading

We focus on the concept that ‘Readers can go on adventures’ and the main area we will be looking at is –

– Patterns in books – such as rhyming words and repetitive text

– Scientist – learning that books can teach us things

We will continue to build our reading stamina and learn how to read and talk about books with our partners.

We will continue with Jolly Phonics – focusing on the letters.

N / C k / E / H / R

Writing/Language Arts

We will begin a unit on Nursery Rhymes and focus on two this week

– Humpty Dumpty

– Little Miss Muffet

Look out for Poem / Nursery Rhyme books coming home that children can read to you.

The emphasis is on finding rhyming words, knowing that rhymes follow a sequence and a pattern.

Math

This week we will focus on the following concepts

– exploring the number of letters in our name and how the same number can be represented in many different ways

– an introduction to sorting

– making graphs using our birthday information

– learning how to make a color pattern either AB or ABC

Social Studies

We will continue to learn more about ourselves and each other – by identifying various ‘favorites’.

We will also begin to make a ebook based on “All About Me”

Other

Remember swimming starts tomorrow and another session on Wednesday.  Please bring the appropriate clothing – as per the notice.

A great week ahead – lets hope the sun stays out!!

19 – 23 August, 2013

This week we will begin the Jolly Phonics program.  This is to learn letter sounds in preparation for reading and writing.  We will focus on one letter per day beginning with s, a, t, i, p

Each night the children will take home a key ring with the new letter and action attached. Please review these sounds daily.  Look at the page on Jolly Phonics (on this website) for more information about this program.

Reading

We begin looking more closely at books and reading behaviors.  The main focus is on “Readers can go on adventures” – which means we look at books and either pretend, be a detective, a scientist, find patterns and be a storyteller.  This is to help the children build an enthusiasm for reading.

We have a specific partner beginning this week and we will use partners to share reading books and ideas about books.

Stamina!! – We have begun building our reading stamina.  This means we look / read books daily for an uninterrupted period of time and try to make this time longer and longer each day.

Writing

We are beginning to build our ‘writing idea book’.  This means children will start to think about their own experiences in relation to an idea such as “I remember a time when I was sad / happy / angry…etc”.  They will draw a response, share with their partner and put it in their book.  When we begin writing small moments children will already have a bank of ideas from which they could write about.

Math

We begin using the program Everyday Math.  This week we will focus on measurement, counting up and down, calendar routines and getting to know all about numbers.

Social Studies

We begin our Social Studies unit – ‘All About Me’.  This will focus on each child learning more about themselves and each other.

In addition to ALL this we will spend a good proportion of the time learning the routine of the class, learning how to be an independent learner and personal management (ESLR).

A great week ahead!!

Thanks

Ms Hamley
