It is extremely important that our students to learn how to effectively read informational texts written by experts.
The following photos show first grade students who are using two online resources created by experts to research about animals. Our students are not only decoding text, they are also asking questions, making meaning, taking notes, navigating research sites with purpose and efficiency and collaborating with a partner. All of this is possible due to the supportive conditions created in the classroom where reading, research and technology skills are explicitly taught and practiced in authentic situations.
SIS subscribes to Britannica School and Pebblego. These are quality databases that can be trusted to have true information and present it in formats which are educational and developmentally appropriate. Both Britannica School and Pebblego have features such as audio for students to have the information read to them. This feature is excellent for all readers as it provides the opportunity to learn new vocabulary with greater ease. The photos and video clips on both resources are of high quality and help our learners build their understanding about new knowledge and complex ideas.
