In preparation for the English report cards of Semester 1, all the Grade 1-5 students will be assessed this week on their English language proficiency.
I will be making use of the WIDA MODEL to recognize the continuum of language development within the 4 domains (Speaking, Listen, Reading and Writing) and throughout 6 proficiency levels. The 6 language proficiency levels describe the progression of English language development for English language learners. The levels, in order from lowest to highest, are labeled:
Level 1: Entering
Level 2: Beginning
Level 3: Developing
Level 4: Expanding
Level 5: Bridging
Level 6: Reaching
The model provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency in each of the 4 language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each test will be taken individually and the results will be shared with you as ‘CAN DO‘ descriptors.

Student X can:
- Use first language to fill in gaps in oral English (code switch)
- Repeat facts or statements
- Describe what people do from action pictures (e.g., jobs of community workers)
- Compare real-life objects (e.g., “smaller,” “biggest”)
