Grade 4 and 5 are practicing their listening skills by listening to Beatles songs! While listening they are trying to unravel the lyrics and guess what the song or theme is about. It is such a fun way to learn new vocabulary, English grammar, practice spelling, read rhymes, learn about emotions and many topics about life.
Yes we’re going back to the 60’s :) Beatles songs proof to be very accessible for everyone of any age because of their simple and powerful lyrics. What most fun is seeing my students leaving the classroom swinging and humming the melody of the songs we’ve been listening to.
Here you see the original text in grey and what the students heard in green.
Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, Help!
Help, you know I need some wine, Help!
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I want to be younger, younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in anyway.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind, I’ve opened up the doors.
Then the gentlemen ran out the doors.
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
If you can I need it now, now now now
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?
And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
I need independency to vanish in the waves
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like, I’ve never done before.
“What do you think this song is about?”
Lucien: “About a grandpa!”
