Weekly Update March 1st

Hello All,

In preparation for the Field Days coming up next week, we took some time to practice some of the events and familiarize ourselves with different pieces of equipment. After these activities we ended with some fun movement videos.

Here are some pictures from the week!

Weekly Update Jan. 31st

Happy Chinese New Year!!

With a week off of school and no PE to keep the kids active, I have compiled a list of videos that the students have followed within the past couple of weeks. These are great videos for the students to get active in a small area.

Weekly Update Jan. 25th

PreK1– This we continued with our body exploration unit. We started the class with watching 3 active videos where the students followed along doing different movements such as bending, running in place, turning around, and shaking their hands. We then did 4 stations related to body control. The station were quick jumping, dancing, jumping on a spot from height, and balance beam. The students showed great body control during the stations!

Kindergarten– In the first class, the students learned and practiced individual balances. Some were easy and some were challenging but all of them taught the students how to move their bodies to different positions using their weight. In our second class, the students partnered up and did 2 person balances. The students learned about pushing and pulling on their partner to create fun balances. In both classes, the students began with a fun warm video they followed along to.

Weekly Update Dec. 14

PreK1. In our last week before winter break we continued with stations. The 4 stations were mat play, soft balls, scooters, and hula hoops. The emphasis for the class was following rules and routines throughout. After entering class, all students must put their water bottles down on the cart and sit properly on a line in front of me. Once we have done this, class can begin. While doing stations, students follow routines of sitting against a wall, being quiet, and waiting for the teacher to call out “rotate”. At this time the students will move to their next stations and begin the routine again. Finally, when the music starts to play, the students can play.

PreK2. In our last week before winter break we continued with stations. The 4 stations were mat play, soft balls, scooters, and hula hoops. The emphasis for class this week was sharing and playing nicely. There was limited equipment in some stations which encouraged the students to play together.

Kindergarten. All of the teams have created their very own team names! This was the first task of the sports education model and the students did great. Below are the teams.

KA

Boston Red Sox

T-Rexes

KB

Blue Bats

Red Dragons

KC

Snowflakes

Gingerbread Men

KD

Blue Magic

4 Dinosaurs

Grade 1. This week, grade 1 started their classes with challenging movements across the gym. Hopping on one foot, broad jumps, low jumps, bear crawls, and seal walks were some of the movements they did. This week, however, I challenged them a bit more by having them do these movements backwards! It required the students to think about how the movement will work and how they will need to adjust their bodies. We then moved on to ball skill stations. The stations were continuous kick against a wall, throwing against a wall with 1 bounce, gaga, and cone catch with a partner.

Weekly Update Dec. 7

PreK1. With winter performances this past week, PE had to make some adjustments but we were able to still have a lot of fun. Some classes were able to play with scooters and have fun with balls and hula hoops inside, while other classes had to move class outside and try different activities.

PreK2. With winter performances this past week, PE had to make some adjustments but we were able to still have a lot of fun. Some classes were able to play with scooters and have fun with balls and hula hoops inside, while other classes had to move class outside where we did other fun activities. In all classes we had some good talks about sharing and how we can share and play together with different equipment.

Kindergarten. This week, I introduced a new concept and style for teaching PE. It is called the Sports Education Model. In this model, students will be placed and participate with set teams for a long duration. The teams will be responsible for creating a team name and appointing some positions like coach and equipment manager. I will award points for actions I see being done well such as sportsmanship or being good listeners. This week, the students were tasked to come up with a team name as well take a team photo. In next weekly update, I will share what the students came up with.  I hope the students are as excited about this as I am.

Grade 1. We continued working on our ball skills in stations but not before we had a great scooter race! We broke the class into 5 teams, had 1 practice round and then it was off to the races. It was a close race that featured many smiles. The stations the students then participated in were dribbling, throwing and catching off the wall, gaga, and cone catch. These skills will help them in many sports and activities that we will play later in the year.

Weekly Update Nov. 30

Prek1. We continued with having a fun warm up activity and then moved on to stations. The warm up activity consisted of jumping and leaping. I want to see the students jump while moving to increase the jumping distance. We then continued with stations. The students are showing a great understanding of how stations work and the general rules they need to follow. The stations we participated in were mat play, soft balls, hula hoops, and ladders.

Prek2. We continued with having a fun warm up activity and then moved on to stations. The warm up activity consisted of jumping and leaping. I want to see the students jump while moving to increase the jumping distance. After the warm up activity we transitioned to stations. I am starting to challenge the students with what they can do at each station. I kept the same stations this week but helped expand their creativity with what they can do with the equipment.

Kindergarten. We started class with a throwing and catching activity. This activity allowed all class members an opportunity to throw and catch the ball to help their team in a friendly competition. I saw many students use their thinking skills about what they should do to successfully throw and catch the ball. We then moved on to stations. The stations they participated in were hitting a target with a ball, jumping rope, catching a ball with a cone, and basketball.

Grade 1. We started both classes with a fun activity. The first class activity was a team building one. In groups of 6, the students had to work together to move across a space. The second activity was a throwing and catching activity.

Weekly Update Nov. 23

Prek1. We have had a great week in PE!!! Classes started with a fun warm up involving hula hoops. We jumped, ran, and stretched using these great pieces of equipment. We then progressed with stations. Last week, we used 3 stations for a better understanding of how they work. This week, we moved up to 4 stations. The stations were: basketball, hula hoops, mat play, and ball play. The students are showing a good understanding of how stations work along with playing in a variety of ways.

Prek2. We have had a great week in PE!!! Classes started with a fun warm up involving hula hoops. We jumped, ran, and stretched using these great pieces of equipment. With their learning and understanding of stations, I feel I am able to create new stations for the students that will test their abilities in a variety of ways. This week the stations included, mat play, kicking to a target, catching with a cone, and bean bag toss.

Kindergarten. This week we started class with a nice warm up involving hula hoops. These pieces of equipment can be used a number of ways and I wanted to share some of those ways with the students. We then began working in stations. One of the stations involved jumping rope. This is a great exercise that we will be working more on in the next couple of weeks.

Grade 1. They were great leaders this week! On Tuesday, 1A had a class join their PE class. I challenged 1A to be good leaders that Prek2C could look up to. 1A did great and showed the little ones how to conduct themselves during class.

Weekly Update Nov. 16

PreK1. This week in PE we introduced two new things to the classes. First, we introduced music to the classroom. If the music is playing, we can play. If the music stops, we must stop and sit down. Music brings a fun and exciting element to PE. The second thing we did was begin using stations. Stations are different areas in the gym where you can do different things. Students must stay in that area for a certain amount time and then we can all switch. At the end of the class, all students will have been to each station. We used three stations this week which included: hurdles, mat play, and hula hoops. I look forward to using stations in more classes.

PreK2. We continued using stations this week. I like using stations because its a nice way for students to try and experiment in multiple areas in a single class. This weeks focus was balls. The four stations were: basketball, hitting a target, dribbling, and rolling toward a target.

Kindergarten. We started each class with some flexibility and core strengthening movements. We were doing movements such as bear crawls, wheelbarrows, and walking like giants. We then continued to progress with out underhand throwing skills. We played a game in which two teams were trying to knock down cones. The classes were fun and had competitive matches.

Weekly Update Nov. 9

PreK1. We had a week of play. During half of the PE class, the students were able to free play. I set out a variety of equipment and let the students have fun doing whatever they chose to do. The equipment included hula hoops, balls, poly spots, hurdles, and mats. It was fun to see the students interact with each other as well as using their creative thinking skills to play.

PreK1- Free Play

Prek2. We continued with stations this week with an emphasis on moving over, through, and under objects. The students were asked to move their bodies in different ways that would allow them to be successful.

Kindergarten. We started all classes with a flexibility and core strengthening session. The students showed off their abilities in this area by holding planks, walking like soldiers, and even trying to put their legs behind their heads. We then worked on our underhand throwing where we had a class competition where the class worked together to achieve a score. To finish up class, the students reflected on the class.

Grade 1A. We started all classes with a flexibility and core strengthening session. The students showed off their abilities in this area by holding planks, walking like soldiers, and even trying to put their legs behind their heads. We also started playing a new game called Fireball. This is a throwing and catching game. Players will try and throw a soft ball at a selected player.
