As we finish up our second full week of school, I’d like to thank the SIS community for the warm welcome. I have had the opportunity to speak to many families and I am looking forward to getting to know more of you as the year unfolds. Before arriving at SIS, I had heard that the community at SIS is unique, with involved and supportive parents collaborating with our teachers and I have found that this is absolutely true. To continue this partnership I will be hosting a monthly coffee morning with parents where we can get to know each other and strengthen our working relationship with the common purpose of making our school great. These meetings will not necessarily have an agenda but will follow a social, open forum approach. The first Principal’s Coffee Morning has been scheduled for Wednesday 20th September from 8:15am-9:15am in the Multipurpose room in Building 7. I hope to see you there!
My wife Paula Brunning, is the College Counsellor at Bayside and we have five children. Three of our children are at SIS in kindergarten, grade 6 and grade 8 and are enjoying learning and exploring all the wonderful experiences SIS and Shenzhen have to offer. This is my 23rd year in education and our family is thrilled to be part of the SIS community. In fact, last week we had our first elementary school assembly, and our youngest commented on how much fun he had. He also mentioned that he thinks he needs to learn Chinese! For our returning families, you probably noticed that the assembly had a different format and setup and we will continue this throughout the year. For more information about when your child’s class will be sharing their learning in assembly, please refer to the ES Administration blog.
From time to time you may hear me using the term primary instead of elementary as this is terminology I am most familiar with, coming from the United Kingdom and working in International Schools that follow the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.
I look forward to seeing you at the Principal’s Coffee Morning.
On behalf of the PSA (Parent Support Association ) I would like to say what a pleasure it is to have you as part of our school community.

Looking forward to meeting you all this year.
Please note that assemblies will look a little different this year.
In an effort to authentically connect the assemblies to the learning that happens in the classroom, each class will take a lead role in at least one assembly throughout the year. This means that the students in each class, will share what they have been learning in a variety of different ways. The goal is to also have the assemblies be more transdsciplinary and include elements across the different curriculum areas.
Your child’s teachers will let you know when your child is involved in one of these assemblies. The ESLR’s will continue to be awarded once a month.
Mrs. Sheppard will continue to lead the school performances, recitals etc. The dates for those can be found here: http://share.sis.org.cn/ksheppard
Mr. Harish Kanabar
We’ve had an excellent start to the new year.
Here are some of the highlights of the first week back:
Ice Cream Social-We warmly welcomed our new families to the SIS community. Parents had the opportunity to learn more about our extensive After School Activities programme, buy additional school kits, meet the Parent Support Association and sample the delights from our new catering company Nom Nom.
Meet the Teacher afternoon saw students finding out who their new teachers are for the year. There was definitely an excitement in the air and parents received important information about schedules, contacts etc.
Curriculum Night offered brief information about SIS’s adoption of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and what this means in terms of Teaching and Learning as well as a quick overview of the authorisation process. Parents then had an in-depth presentation with their child’s homeroom teacher about what to expect over the course of the year. Both sessions stressed the importance of the parent, student, teacher partnership and how working together will give your children and our students the best opportunity for success.
Parents and teachers have commented that we’ve had a positive smooth start, despite the challenges of the construction outside the Jin Shan campus. To continue this, we’d like to remind you to park and drop off your children in the designated areas.
Finally, all the adults that visit our school are expected to wear yellow lanyards. If you do not have one of these, please visit the office at Mountainside and talk to one of extremely helpful office assistants Sonia and Laurie.
