Second Full Week of Grade 2

: In reading, during the week we  formally assessed all third graders’ reading skills. This allowed us to plan instruction to best support and challenge all readers. In the meantime, we will continue working on skills that readers practice when they are building a reading life. Please support your child at home by talking about your reading life and talking about books you and your child read at home. Having conversations about what we read and pausing as we read to do comprehension checks are the main goals this week.

Students were assessed on their spelling and writing skills this week. They are learning how to work through the writing process (prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish) with an emphasis on revising and drafting.  We are beginning our first Unit of Study, which involves writing personal narratives.  Have a conversation with your child about some of the ideas of stories from their life that they have brainstormed this week.

In Math we have begun exploring the relationship between multiplication and addition.  Your child has divided objects into equal groups to see the addition and multiplication problems they represent.  Your child has also been introduced to seeing equal groups as arrays.

We have begun our first unit of inquiry this week. The central idea is People can collaborate to organize society. The focus this week will be on rights and responsibilities. The theme we will explore is How We Organize Ourselves.

Suggested Rainy Day Activities…

Reading-Encourage your child to read at home, read to a sibling and be read to.  We have been talking about doing “stop and jots” as readers in class.  Encourage your child to notice their thinking and share it with you!

Writing- We have been generating ideas for personal narrative writing.  Talk with your child about the ideas they have come up with so far and any new ideas they might have.  Thinking about people and places special to them will help your child remember important memories to prepare for writing stories from their life.

Math- We have begun multiplication this week in math.  Encourage your child to find some toys in their room and sort them into equal groups, then think about the addition and multiplication number sentence that would go along with it.

UOI-  We have begun talking about “organization” this week.  Talk with your child about how they organize themselves at home.  Ask…

How is your room organized to help you?

What are some of your responsibilities (jobs) at home?

What routines are important to our family to get us to school on time? To bed?  Homework?

Enjoy your time as a family today!

First full week in Grade 3!

We have had such a great first full week of school together!  Looking back at our week, we have launched Reading, Writing, and Math workshop and we have also started to inquire into our first UOI, Systems and Societies.  We have been focusing on creating a class culture together and have agreed that we need to: be kind, safe, take risks and try our best at all that we do!

Reminder:  Your child will be swimming in PE Tuesdays and Fridays and has library every Friday as well.

Back to school we go!

Welcome to our Grade 3 community here at SIS!  I am thrilled to be working with both you and your child this year!  Your child will experience an amazing year of growth both socially and academically.  Together we will work together to support your child in living their best life!  Here’s to now!
