Here is what we are learning..

In reading workshop this week, students will collaborate with their Book Club team to discuss the characters, the character’s “sidekicks” and possible adversaries the character encounters. They will also track the journey of the story- including the adventures and problems the characters encounter by drawing and labeling a “story mountain.”

Writers will continue to move through the writing process, working on their persuasive speeches.   Students will draw attention to editing strategies to “edit as they go!”  This involves growing in their awareness around using capitalization, punctuation, spelling and grammar choices.

Mathematicians will apply their knowledge of area with an emphasis on real-world applications by solving word problems. The word problems provide a stepping-stone for the real-world, project-based application of area.

Students will work on learning more about life cycles, inherited and behavioral traits and how animals survive. They are choosing their own animal to research and they will create a poster to present their learning to the class.

Happy New Year!

It is so great to be back together as a school community!

Students will ponder the reading goals they have set for themselves and will make new resolutions for their reading lives as well as their personal lives. Readers will begin a new unit on Character Study. This week we will put a strong emphasis on learning a broad range of “Colorful Adjectives” to describe characters in the stories we read. For example, instead of writing “My character is nice.” We will learn to substitute nice for: considerate, thoughtful, caring, etc. This will make us stronger writers as well.

This week we will be launching a new unit of study in writing, persuasive speeches, petitions and editorials.  Students will delve into this unit by immersing themselves in the genre and noticing how writers persuade an audience to share their opinion.

Mathematicians will be introduced to area. They will use pattern blocks to tile given polygons without gaps or overlaps to determine the amount of two-dimensional space is within a region or shape. By the end of the week, students will begin to relate total area with multiplication of side lengths.

We are starting a new unit and Sharing the Planet is the theme. Our central idea is “Organisms adapt to their environment in order to survive.” This week we will do some tuning in activities with the kids getting their minds excited and curious about organisms surviving in their habitats, as well as learning from fossils about past organisms.

Please note:  Next Wednesday we have a field trip…permission slips have been sent out and should be returned by this Friday.
