Earth Week is this week!

Earth Week Schedule Monday 18th – Friday 22nd

Monday – “Love Earth Monday”

Each class will receive 10 pieces of square paper. Use this to draw a picture or write a poem about the Earth. We will collect them on Friday and put them together as an “Earth Week Quilt.”

Climate change –

Tuesday – “Reusable Tuesday”

Bring snacks in reusable containers and use reusable utensils. Teachers and students can take photos and tweet them to the hashtag: #SISreuses

Plastic Planet –

Wednesday – “Save Electricity Wednesday”

Try to conserve electricity in school (try to not use lights, A/C, projectors, etc.)

Saving Electricity –

Thursday – “Save Water Thursday”

The focus is saving water. Time yourself taking a shower and see if you can shorten this time. Make sure that turn off the water as you soap up. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

Friday – “Saving Paper Friday”

Use recycled paper or one-sided paper, use only 1 paper towel when drying hands, etc.

Walkathon for Fiji

The rain held off and a majority of students from 4th and 5th showed their support for Fiji by donating money and joining in the walkathon organized by Cadence. In all, Cadence raised 1,359 RMB, which will be donated to the Red Cross Australia for relief for Cyclone Winston. Thank you SIS community for your all your help!



Guest Readers and Birthday Celebration

We were lucky enough to have Mrs. Robertson-Jones come in as a guest reader. She and Talia read an Elephant and Piggy book together in front of the class, modelling just how exciting these simple books can be to read with a partner. Afterward, students had a chance to read multiple Elephant and Piggy books together. It was exciting to see all the students get engaged, and even act out some of the stories that they were reading. After they finished reading, we gathered around and sang Happy Birthday to Talia and enjoyed some delicious cupcakes.


Mixtures and Solutions

We started our new science unit this week, Mixtures and Solutions. We began by exploring what mixtures and solutions are, and discussing how they are similar and different. Students created three water mixtures, by adding pebbles, salt and diatomaceous earth to cups with water. They then tried to separate the mixtures, using screens and filters. They found that they were able to separate the pebbles with the screen and the diatomaceous earth with the filters, but the salt didn’t separate. This is because the salt dissolved and became a solution. Below are some pictures of their investigations.

Fiji Walkathon – Wednesday, March 23rd

After being inspired about the action that others have taken to change the world, Cadence decided she wanted to help her home nation Fiji after the devastating cyclone Winston left over 120,000 without shelter. Please join us on Wednesday, March 23rd during 4th and 5th grade morning recess by joining in the walkathon she organized by wearing blue and donating 20 RMB. Movers and Shakers Summit

Six week ago, students started learning about monumental movers and shakers who shaped the world. This kicked off their journey of finding someone who inspired them, and taking action to fix a problem. To share their journey, they gave speeches today to share about their path to become movers and shakers. Thank you all for your motivating speeches! If you were not able to make your child’s speech, they will be coming home with the video on their ipad to share with you.
