Today was a big day for third graders. We had our Publishing Party and parents were invited to listen to the stories learners wrote.
Thanks parents for coming and for celebrating with us. Students have been working hard on their adapted fairy tales and it’s very important for them to have you here.

If you were not able to come, that’s no problem. All the fairy tales are in students’ blogs, so you can listen to them and leave a compliment.

Thank you

Heifer International. Read to Feed

Dear Parents!

SIS is supporting an organization called Heifer International. Heifer works to fight world hunger and poverty by educating and supporting farmers in sustainable farming practices. Heifer International has many projects in China.

We are joining the Read to Feed program organized by Heifer. In the Read to Feed program, students are able to raise money from family and friends who wish to sponsor them. Sponsors decide how to donate money ( a donation for each book read by the student or through a one time donation.)

Students will bring home the Read to Feed forms and information on Wednesday, November 26. During the next two weeks, the student read, read, and read!

Students should collect money from their sponsors before December 9 and hand in the money on Wednesday, December 10.

The money will be donated to Heifer International. Heifer not only provides livestock to villagers but also trains farmers how to care for the animals. Heifer will buy animals for villagers with the money we raised. SIS will decide what type of animal(s) we can buy with the money we raise. Heifer gives goats, chickens, pigs and cows to farmers and educates them on good farming practices.

Here are some website links to learn more about Heifer International!

Attached are some pictures to help you see the steps students can take to help raise money and buy farm animals to be donated to people in need.

Thank you for your support!

Gaylene Livingston,

Lunar Landers STEM Challenge

Last Friday students were challenged to design, create and build something that would keep two astronauts (marshmallows) in their cabin (paper cup) when dropped from 2 feet.

For this challenge, teams were given 8 straws, 3 index cards, 1 paper cup, 3 rubber bands, 10 small marshmallows and 2 large marshmallows and had 25 minutes to create.

This has been our 4th STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Challenge and students realised the importance of testing their artefacts and redesigning them to achieve their goal, to solve the problem, the challenge.

Two of four teams were successful, and after reflecting students agreed that working together as a team, communicating and supporting each other ideas was much more successful tag trying to it on their own.

Reading Buddies Publishing Party

Last Friday we were invited to our reading buddies Publishing Party. We enjoyed listening to their stories and reading some of our personal narratives and adapted fairy tales to them. Our buddies loved reading the compliments we wrote for them.

At the end we were invited to eat some fruits and other snacks. It was really fun!
