This week we will begin working with U.S. coins in math. Pennies, nickels, and dimes provide a fun and tangible way for kids to count by 1s, 5s, and 10s. It also allows them to experiment with exchanging multiple numbers to come up with the same sum. For example, this week, I’ll be putting a number on the chart such as, 12 cents, and asking the children to come up with several different coin combinations that make 12 using pennies, nickels, and dimes. If your home country’s money also lends itself to counting in 1s, 5s, and/or 10s, I would encourage you to share this learning with your child. In other news, there will be no school on Thursday, as I will be meeting with you during Parent/Teacher conferences. And, on Friday, the entire Grade One will celebrate Chuseok, the Korean Harvest Holiday. Many thanks to all of the parents who are helping with this event.
