PreK1 Friendly Friday

What is Friendly Friday?

Friendly Friday is a special time of the day where children are mixed with the other classes. This is an opportunity for the children to explore what they can do and how they can collaborate with either a new friend or an old friend in a different learning environment. Friendly Friday is also a great time for teachers to observe, and take notes to refer back when creating class lists that will (hopefully) help each child ease the transition to PreK2.

PreK1 had there first Friendly Friday experience last week. The children were glad to see familiar faces in the classroom, and they were also very excited to explore a new environment and experience more play-based learning engagements with either old friends or new friends.

Week 28 @PreK1a, Brave Bears Journey to Digital Portfolio Update – Why and what is a digital portfolio?

Why digital portfolio?

The purpose of Digital Portfolio is to be transparent, authentic and personalized, with a home and school connection, and have our students become innovative contributors to a global world. (Christian K, Lopez A, Vargas L, 2014)

Digital Portfolio also supports Expected School Wide Learning Results (ESLR’s) skills development.

What is a digital portfolio?

A digital portfolio as we all know are compilations of work in digital form. This definition is easy to understand by older learners, but not for young English language learners.

So, the Brave Bears have learned that anything that they see on their mommy, daddy, older sisters, older brothers, grandparents, uncles, and aunties phones, iPads, and computers are digital, especially the photos. The Brave Bears even looked into their class blog, Ms. Ann’s digital portfolio (Instagram), and got a glimpse¬†of their own blog in Seesaw.

Also, the Brave Bears learned that their individual folder in the classroom is called paper portfolio and any of their work on the screen will be in their digital portfolio.

Next week, the Brave Bears will learn how and what to post on their own blog. Also, they will participate in learning engagements that will spark their curiosity, such as which sinks and which floats. In addition, the Brave Bears will be introduced to the digital story making where they can add audio on their own created stories.

…and here is the Brave Bears’ April Calendar.

@PreK1a Visits Sky Farm

Brave Bears’ PSA sponsored trip to Sky Farm was full of fun and hands-on learning!

The Brave Bears had the opportunity to experience what they can rarely experience in the city! They fed some farm animals, made soya milk in a traditional way, and even learned and planted herbs. Thank you, PSA!

Week 27 @PreK1A, Brave Bears – Did you take a good picture?

In the past few weeks, the Brave Bears have been learning how and what makes a good picture. Prior to learning the basics of taking photos using an iPad, they had to review the basics in handling a shared iPad.

Then, the Brave Bears shared what they know about how to take a picture using an iPad, and came up with a procedure on how to take a good picture.

The Brave Bears also had a picture walk and tagged good and bad photos (green for good and red for bad pictures). The next day, the Brave Bears shared what they noticed and compared the photos. They noticed that good pictures are clear, beautiful, full picture, happy face, and many colors. While bad pictures are blurry, not a full picture, and not focused.

With the criteria of a good picture, the Brave Bears took pictures of their chosen subject.

The Brave Bears were even asked to assess the photos they’ve taken. The best photo they’ve chosen are the ones that were submitted for the ECC Art Collaborative Project. Click here to learn more about the project.

This week, the Brave Bears will be introduced to their digital portfolio and will be guided on how they can independently share their own learning through the Seesaw app. In addition, the Brave Bears will learn more about bookmaking.
