Steve makes clear the different roles of his life. Yet he can talk more than just what it represents. He can expand his poem by talking about his approach on finding the relationship between language and identity to make the poem more meaningful.

You articulate very well the various roles that Cantonese, Mandarin, and English play in your life. The ending is very effective — as an English language learner immersed in an English speaking environment, who knows what the future holds for you and the the roles that each language will play?

I think your visual image played a significant role in your entire poem. It gave me an impact even before I started listening to the poem.

Hey Steve! I found that your ability to process other languages and then translate it to mandarin in your head is extremely interesting. My first language was english, so my innate response is to depict other languages and change it into english. I can also see that despite konwing the languages you speak daily, and despite how they shape you as a person, you still don’t have a vivid answer to your question, and sometimes thats okay! Great poem Steve 🙂

    Hi Steve,

I really liked how you incorporated the different languages in your poem, it really brought how significant each of the languages are, in terms of how they influence your life. Great job!

Hi Steve. I appreciate the way that you explain how each language represents some part of your life. I also think not having an answer right now is okay. I think it is incredible that you are trilingual. You have access to parts of the world that I just do not as a monolingual. Nice work on the poem!

    Hi Steve,
I really liked how you explained how each language represent a different aspect of your life. This was very interesting to me, because though Chinese was my first language, I think in English in my head, so it was really interesting to see another perspective, I also really liked how you incorporated multiple languages in your poem
