Cooking

Some Wednesdays Ms.Joan has been leading cooking activities with the children. This week they made garlic bread. The children have also made mashed potatoes and eggs and tomatoes. The children really enjoy cooking activities. Even though the activities seem quite simple, the children get to use their fine motor skills with utensils and learn good hygiene habits for food handling. Being exposed to different kinds of foods and having pride in making the food themselves, makes the children more interested in tasting new things.

Thoughts for families:Do you involve your child in food shopping or food preparation at home? Do you ask your child for their thoughts or ideas for planning meals?

Earth Week

During Earth Week we read stories about keeping our natural environment clean. We talked about how keeping our environment clean, we can keep people and animals safe and healthy. Putting our garbage in the trash and not on the ground, is one way The Laser Bugs agreed that we could be responsible for our environment. We also agreed that it was important to keep our school clean. We decided to walk around our Mountianside campus to check for garbage.

Muffin Time

The children are always a part of the preparations for classroom celebrations. For CNY we decorated and cleaned the classroom. When I asked The children what kind of activities they would like to do when their parents came; they decided that they would share their Learning Portfolios. Of course they were most excited about sharing food for the potluck brunch! They were proud to work together to prepare muffins for their parents.

Noticing-Recognizing-Wondering

Noticing- The Laser Bugs observed something different and interesting happening in their school environment.

Recognizing- They understood that this person was a member of our community and that his work was important.

Wondering- The children were curious as to why the gardener was fixing the grass. They stopped to ask him questions and discussed their theories on the purpose of the gardener’s work.

Rose’s Butterflies

During the break Rose visited Ever Green Park. She brought her framed butterflies into show her friends. The children loved looking at the butterflies and came up with many theories of how they may have died and how they got inside the frame. This sharing moment became a great learning opportunity, we had many discussions on the children’s ideas and we did some observational drawing.
