What is stinky, disgusting, and totally necessary for the Earth’s health and well-being? Decomposition of course! When we think of decomposition, unpleasant images of death and creepy-crawlies often enter our minds. What we forget is that decomposition is a completely natural and important process that helps to recycle nutrients back into the Earth’s soil. Students in 4B are studying decomposition by beginning an experiment in which we observe the progress of decomposition of fruits and vegetables. Each group has chosen a variable that they will add to their container to see what affect it has on the rate of decomposition. Stay tuned for what we discover!
