Hour of Code – Hour of Fun!

Fourth grade students are preparing for the future and having fun while doing it! Students visited Level 5 for the first time, where Mr. Burns and Ms. Beabout walked them through six different coding challenges. They learned basics about wireframes, coding robots to perform tasks, and other important skills they might need to know in their future professions. Best quote of the day: “I don’t want to go to lunch! Can’t we stay here and keep working?”

Edmodo? Absolutely!

We are getting connected here in 4B by starting up our Edmodo accounts! Students will be using Edmodo this year to submit their homework, track their progress, and access class documents. Parents can view their child’s progress by using their Parent Codes. Edmodo is yet another way that technology helps make learning transparent and accessible in 4B!

“Changing Our (Minecraft) World”

The long awaited day has finally arrived! Students had downloaded Minecraft onto their iPads long before in preparation for our Social Studies unit, “Changing Our World”. As part of the launch, students watched relevant videos about global issues such as monitoring your ecofootprint, mountaintop removal, garbage, sustainable logging, freshwater, mining rare earths, and disappearing habitats! After using Jigsaw and a 3-2-1 Bridge routine to share our thinking, students began planning how they would create their Minecraft worlds by creating a Moxtra binder for their assigned group. This binder houses all of the group’s screenshots, drawings, notes, and chats about their Minecraft world. Each student is responsible for reflecting on their learning each day as well.

Launching COW

Having finished up our science unit, we have begun a social studies unit called “Changing Our World” (COW) which ties into some of the concepts previously addressed in our unit on “Environments”: namely, what are some of the ways in which humans have changed their environments? We began our launch by having students brainstorm ideas about how humans change their world in a Today’s Meet. Then they looked at images from the Google Time Lapse Project. Using photos gathered by Landsat satellites since 1984, we are now able to see amazing time lapse footage of how the surface of the planet has changed over the past thirty years – much of it due to human intervention, both positive and negative. It was particularly fascinating to see how much Shekou has changed over the past twenty years – it used to be so much greener!

4B Hour of Code

4B participated in Hour of Code on December 10th! Students watched a few introductory videos explaining the purpose of Hour of Code, including a message from US president, Barack Obama! Then they got started by trying out various coding apps such as Lightbot, Cargo-bot, Daisy the Dinosaur, and a popular coding app based on the movie, “Frozen”. Students enjoyed being part of this worldwide phenomenon and expressed their interest in exploring coding further!

Pro-Bot Practice!

4B got ready for Hour of Code next week by practicing with Pro-Bots today! Students were paired up and each partnership was given a Pro-Bot to experiment with for three minutes. After three minutes, the class came together and shared out their discoveries about how their Pro-Bots worked. Then students were given the task of creating a square on a piece of paper based on the code that they had programmed into their Pro-Bot. Not everyone was successful but everyone had fun trying!
