Coding at SIS in the early years

This past December, some of our early years students learned how to use instructions to program floor robots.

Creating and following step by step instructions is important when developing and practicing computational mathematics concepts and skills.

Using the programmable floor robots (beebots) was an excellent introduction to coding.

Special thanks to KD teacher, Miss Sharlene and our primary school IT coach, David Sheppard for sharing their expertise. It was enjoyable to see our learners explore and apply ideas in new ways.

Grade 1 – animal and biomimicry research!

December 9, 2018 by Ms. L | 0 comments

First grade have been researching as part of their science unit. I was able to collaborate and co-teach with the first grade teachers to guide students in building  understanding about what effective on-line resources might look like and how to use their features.

First graders used a trusted animal database site called pebbleGo and a site called BrainPOPjr to learn more about animals, as well as build their non-fiction reading skills (on-line).

Biomimicry is one of the concepts being covered in this research unit. Be sure to ask your first grader for examples of biomimicry in nature. Here is a link for adults on this concept.
